Portrush is the home of surfing in Northern Ireland, with waves on both its West and East Strands. This well developed and popular surfing location has everything on offer, including several surf shops and schools. Arguably the finest surfing in the Foyle area is at Benone (pronounced "Ben Own"), near Limavady and close to the Magilligan side of the Foyle Ferry crossing. There are toilet facilities at this Blue Flag beach and usually (in the summer holiday season) a life guard post. There is camping and caravanning nearby and a hostel at the Downhill end of the beach.
Waves tend to get progressively bigger further east along the strand and tend to be more rolling and less violent than at other Atlantic coast locations.
When to go?
Year round, although April to November are considered the best surf conditions. Always wear adequate wetsuit for weather conditions. As with any outdoor activity, always carry out thorough planning before your trip, put a safety plan in place and wear and carry appropriate safety equipment. In the event of an emergency call 999.
